Speaker Biographies
Gary Beckstedt serves as World Micro's Director of Quality, heading the company's Atlanta headquarters quality department. Gary's role requires him to coordinate all quality programs and processes in Atlanta, including ISO standards programs, ESD programs, inspection and counterfeit detection, personnel training, and the U.S. Government's Qualified Suppliers List of Distributors (QSLD) program.
Gary is a certified I.D.E.A inspector, and has been working in the electronics industry since 1988 in a variety of roles. His experience ranges from sales and sales support, to component level technician, to purchasing. Gary has worked for companies of all sizes, including a 4 year tour with the United States Air Force where he served as a RADAR technician and operator in support of Desert Shield, Desert Storm. He is the Secretary for the Atlanta Chapter of the SMTA, and sits on the Counterfeit Subcommittee of the SMTA-HQ.
Dr. Bill Cardoso is a dynamic executive and researcher with +15 years of impressive history driving revolutionary breakthroughs in high-tech industry for worldwide private, governmental, medical, aerospace, and research institutions. His recent government customers include DHS, NIH, NSF, NASA, DOE, ONR, DARPA, Navy, and prime defense and aerospace contractors. Dr. Cardoso founded Creative Electron, Inc. (CEI) in 2008. A defense contractor specializing in turnkey solutions, Creative Electron, Inc. has four business units: TruView X-ray Inspection Systems, Radiation Detector Systems, Microfabrication & Assembly, and Conductive Adhesives. Dr. Cardoso is also the author of several proposals in response to Broad Agency Announcements and SBIR solicitations. Under his leadership, the Creative Electron team of engineers have created the first fully automated reel-to-reel counterfeit inspection system, and the easy-to-use TruView x-ray inspection systems are adding value to the US supply chain as businesses work to avoid counterfeit components. He serves on the G-19 government group establishing the mil spec for counterfeit detection. His innovative conductive adhesives are respected as the low cost solution to the RoHS regulation. Prior to founding Creative Electron, Dr. Cardoso was President and Co-Owner of Aguila Technologies, a business founded in 1996, focused on defense, medical imaging, and aerospace radiation detectors. At Aquila, Dr. Cardoso created, developed, designed, marketed, and sold the first handheld Radiation Threat Detector (RTD) capable of identifying threats to our nation before they are deployed. He also invented innovative solutions to process and assemble Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) crystals for homeland security, medical imaging, and astrophysics gamma and x-ray applications. Dr. Cardoso also chaired monthly marketing efforts with California’s Congress Representatives, DoD, and DHS. Aguila was acquired by Creative Electron, Inc. in 2008. Prior to joining Aguila Technologies in 2007, Dr. Cardoso spent 10 years at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). Fermilab is an internationally renowned DOE laboratory and the world leader in nuclear particle physics research. Dr. Cardoso was the Head of the Fermilab Electronics Systems Engineering Department, leading a group of 27 engineers with a budget of $25M. Dr. Cardoso played key role in the design and development of radiation detector systems to find the structure of matter, and ultimately the origins of the universe. He also headed development of onboard electronics for a new NASA satellite. Dr. Cardoso served in review panels for several projects at Fermilab and other national laboratories and universities. Dr. Cardoso’s first company, Robotec Automation Systems, was founded in 1996. At Robotec, Dr. Cardoso pioneered a boutique R&D consulting business model specialized in state-of-the art electronic designs ranging from R&D to turnkey solutions. He developed emerging technologies for electronic systems in automotive, medical, and industrial markets. Robotec was sold to private equity in 1998.
Diganta Das (Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park, B.Tech, Manufacturing Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology) is a member of the research staff at the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering. His expertise is in reliability, environmental and operational ratings of electronic parts, uprating, electronic part reprocessing, counterfeit electronics, technology trends in the electronic parts and parts selection and management methodologies. He performs benchmarking processes and organizations of electronics companies for parts selection and management and reliability practices. Dr. Das has published more than 50 articles on these subjects, and presented his research at international conferences and workshops. He had been the technical editor for two IEEE standards and is vice chairman of IEEE Reliability Society Standard Board coordinating two additional standards. He is an editorial board member for the journal Microelectronics Reliability and Circuit World. He is a Six Sigma Black Belt and a member of IEEE, SMTA and IMAPS.
Larry DeFazio, (VP, Sales & Marketing, QinetiQ Technology Extension Corporation (QTEC); worldwide responsibility for all Sales and Marketing activities). Prior to joining QTEC in 2004 Larry was with SAP America as Partner Manager with their Complementary Software Programs organization and Director of Sales in the Midwest Region. Before joining SAP America, Larry was with ERP vendor CINCOM Systems holding various managerial positions in strategic planning, pricing, business management and division director. Larry's early career was with the NCR corporation with various sales & managerial positions in the US, Middle East and Africa.
Dan Deisz got his B.S.E.E. from the University of Alabama in 1984 and has more than 25 years experience in design engineering, technology marketing, and engineering management. Dan started his career at Harris Government Systems in Melbourne, Florida, doing digital design. In his 20 years at LSI Logic from 1987 through 2007, he supported several hundred ASIC designs through the signoff process, managed all the North American Design Centers, and ended his tenure in Technology Marketing. Dan currently manages the Design Group at Rochester Electronics and is based out of their Rockville, Maryland, office. Previous publications include US patent 7424696 and patent application 20090285261.
Peter Gabriele is the Technical Director and co-founder of ARmark Authentication Technologies. Mr. Gabriele holds both BS and MS degrees in bio-chemistry from the University of Hartford; a MSE and MS in Engineering and Technology Business Management from the University of Pennsylvania PENN Engineering and The Wharton School of Business, and a MS in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins. He is the recipient of the Roon Award for coatings research and the Dahlquest Award to research in adhesive science.
Mr. Gabriele’s technical background has involved a number of integrated technologies including pharmaceutical authentication, medical device development, drug delivery, document security, photonics, and photoimaging. He has over 13 years experience in photoimagable specialty chemistry in the IC and PWB. He has over 40 US and foreign patents issued and pending.
Robin B. Gray, Jr. is the President and CEO of the Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA). ECIA was formed in January 2011 as a result of a merger between the National Electronic Distributors Association (NEDA) and the Electronic Components Association (ECA). As Executive Vice President of NEDA for 16 years, Robin was instrumental in bringing together electronic component manufacturers and their authorized distributors to create ECIA. He brings to this industry leadership position more than 16 years in the electronics industry and 25 years of association management experience. He is a frequent speaker at electronics industry and association events on topics about distribution trends and developments, IP theft and counterfeiting, technology trends and legal issues.
Prior to joining NEDA, Robin worked for the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) in Washington, D.C. Starting as ASTA’s Associate General Counsel in 1983, he served in a number of positions within ASTA, including General Counsel and Acting President. Robin’s extensive association experience includes employment as General Counsel and Legislative Analyst in Washington, D.C., for two other associations. He currently is serving, or has served, in numerous capacities in various professional, civic and sports organizations, including serving on the Industry Advisory Board at Texas A&M University and past president of the Georgia Society of Association Executives.
Dr. James A. Hayward is Chairman, President, and CEO of Applied DNA Sciences. With over 20 years of experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, life science and consumer product industries, Dr. Hayward is actively involved in the global effort to ensure the authenticity of products and the protection of global supply chains from counterfeiting and diversion. Patented and applied in over 600 million products throughout the world, the Company’s SigNature® DNA markers are unique, botanical, “green” DNA sequences that can help preserve the quality and integrity of products from pharmaceutics to cosmetics.
Dr. Hayward received his Bachelor's degree in Biology and Chemistry from the State University of New York at Oneonta in 1976, his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1983, and an honorary Doctor of Science from the same institution in 2000. He was one of the founding principals and research director of Europe's first liposome company, Biocompatibles Ltd. From 1984 to 1989, he was responsible for product development at Esteé Lauder Companies.
In 1990, Dr. Hayward founded The Collaborative Group, a provider of products and services to the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and consumer-product industries based in Stony Brook. For 14 years, he served as Chairman, President and CEO of Collaborative, spawning multiple businesses including The Collaborative BioAlliance, a contract developer and manufacturer of human gene products, that was sold to Dow Chemical in 2002, and Collaborative Labs, a service provider and manufacturer of ingredients for skincare and dermatology was sold to Engelhard (now BASF) in 2004.
Dr. Hayward has been twice named “Entrepreneur of the Year;” in 2002 by Inc. Magazine and in 2009 by the Long Island Technology Hall of Fame. Dr. Hayward has been a General Partner of Double D Venture Fund, a venture capital firm based in New York, New York. Dr. Hayward has served on the boards of many companies, the Stony Brook Foundation, the Research Foundation of the State of New York, the Long Island Association, the New York Biotechnology Association, the Long Island Life Sciences Initiative and the Ward Melville Heritage Foundation.
Joseph Klingfus, Ph.D. has been an Applications Scientist with Raith USA for 10 years. I am responsible for user training and customer support of electron beam and ion beam lithography systems and semiconductor navigation product lines. Raith provides world-wide sales and support of software and hardware solutions for the nanolithography and nanofabrication communities and the semiconductor marketplace.
Barbara Kyle, National Coordinator, The Electronics TakeBack Coalition (ETBC). The Electronics TakeBack Coalition is a national coalition of environmental and consumer organizations promoting green design and responsible recycling of consumer electronics in the U.S. Founded in 2001, ETBC and its member groups use policy initiatives, purchasing strategies, grassroots campaigns, and certification programs to encourage electronics manufacturers to take back and responsibly recycle their old products when consumers are done with them, to promote high standards for e-waste recycling, and to encourage the redesign of products to be less toxic, longer lasting, and more recyclable. Barbara has spent the last 25 years working as a campaigner, researcher, and manager in the non-profit sector, including community organizations, legal services, the University of California Berkeley, the Service Employees International Union, and the California Labor Federation. She has been with ETBC since 2005.
Denise S. Lingenfelter, Vice President Business Consulting, Channel One. Denise S. Lingenfelter has joined Channel One as the VP Business Consulting. With over 25 years in Military and Commercial Supply Chain and Operations Management, starting out Honeywell in Materials Management , moving into Contract Manufacturing as the Division Materials Manager for all military programs at both Honeywell Center of Excellence in Tampa, Florida – and then as well at SCI in Huntsville. The past twelve years were spent in electronic component distribution within the supply chain and logistics area, progressing thru to VP of Global Supply Chain. While at Future Electronics, Denise offered consulting to over 300 international companies in the areas of regarding materials management, designing for the supply chain, materials management within the life cycle of the product in conjunction with lean manufacturing initiative’s. Denise was certified in Lean Manufacturing at Mississippi State School of Business and has guided many organizations thru the process of designing, implementing and measuring the Total Cost of Acquisition and Total Cost of Ownership of these initiatives.
Mark Marshall has degree in Electrical Engineering and has been working in the field of electronic component evaluation for over 25 years. He has expertise in the evaluation, testing and qualification of Integrated Circuits. He has extensive experience in Integrated Circuit component management and played a key role in setting supplier strategies for NCR, AT&T and Lucent. Over the past 6 years Mark has been on the forefront of the counterfeiting issue, working with the electronics industry to manage the associated risks. He has provided leadership to sub committees working on new counterfeit avoidance standards including the IDEA 1010B and the G19 SAE AS6171. Mark currently is the Vice President of Engineering at Integra Technologies the leading components testing lab in the United States. Mark is responsible for the engineering development group with expertise in many fields of component test including microprocessors, memories, ASIC’s, RF and mixed signal as well as expertise in qualification and environmental stressing of components.
Kearly Neilson currently is an International Trade Specialist with Customs and Border Protection working in IPR Policy and Programs. She is a former CBP Officer and Import Specialist from Los Angeles, California, experienced in field inspections, targeting, and seizures in the air and sea environment. She had also been instructors for International Law Enforcement Academy teaching a variety of courses on IPR and Border Enforcement. She will be sharing information about CBP's Role in IPR Enforcement, the challenges faced by America’s frontline border agency and how industry can partner with Government to authenticate and facilitate movement of cargo.
Anne Poncheri is the Managing Director for Silicon Cert Laboratories in Reading, Pennsylvania. Having over twenty years experience in Quality Management Systems, she has held various management positions in Quality and Engineering in industries including telecommunications, automotive, plastics, and chemicals. Currently, she is a member of the SAE Aerospace G19 Counterfeit Electronic Components Committee which is chartered to address aspects of preventing, detecting, responding to and counteracting the threat of counterfeit electronic components. Silicon Cert Laboratories is an independent testing facility which offers reliability testing and analytical services. They have a comprehensive Electronic Component Counterfeit Detection program.
Tom Sharpe is the Vice President of SMT Corporation, located in Sandy Hook Connecticut. Tom co-founded SMT with his wife Kirsten in 1995 and they have since built SMT into one of the industry’s leading Independent Stocking Distributors of electronic components. In addition to being a long-time member of ERAI, Tom is the current Vice President of IDEA where he has served continuously on the Board of Directors since the year of it’s formation in 2003.
Tom is an associate member of Aerospace Industry Association’s Counterfeit Parts IPT, and a member of SAE International’s G-19 committee that is currently developing the new AS6081 Independent Distributor certification standard. Tom also serves on the G-19A sub-committee that is drafting the recommended test methods for the AS6171 Component Test & Inspection standard.
Tom is very active on the Defense & Aerospace Industry speaking tour and has become a leading voice from the Independent sector in the fight against counterfeit components in the electronics industry. Tom’s presentations serve to educate all sectors of the electronics industry about the growing dangers of counterfeits in today’s market, and best practices to detect and mitigate those dangers.
Kevin Sink is the Director of Quality at TTI, Inc. TTI is a specialty distributor of passive, interconnect, electromechanical and discrete components headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. Kevin has served with NEDA on counterfeit mitigation strategies and is currently a committee member for SAE developing the counterfeit mitigation standard for distribution, AS6081. He began his career as a buyer with General Dynamics and has worked in many roles in the electronics industry including sales, product management, sales management and sales operations before assuming responsibility for Quality. Kevin holds two business degrees from Texas A&M University and is celebrating his 19th year with TTI. Kevin’s passion for developing and managing new processes and systems makes him well suited to tackle emerging issues in our industry.
Dr. David P.H. Smith is responsible for the commercialization of TTP’s initiative in security printing and has been with TTP since 2001, primarily working on the development and commercialization of TTP’s proprietary inkjet technologies. This has involved the raising of substantial funding and the establishment of strong commercial and technical relationships with partners. Prior to joining TTP, David previously worked for Marconi Space and Defense, Imation and 3M, where he formed two new groups: Systems and Process Development Group and the 3M European Optics Centre. He won the prestigious 3M Circle of Technical Excellence award for Leadership and Championing on three separate occasions. He then gained company formation experience, serving as CEO of Auryx Technologies limited (an inkjet company spun out of Imation) and as Managing Director of InSciTe Ltd a consultancy company. David is a physics graduate of Imperial College where he gained a distinction at M.Sc and a Ph.D specializing in the physics of electronic materials.
Donald V. Trenholm, CEO of Custom Analytical Services Inc, an analytical laboratory engaged in performing Surface Analysis, Material Analysis, Failure Mode Analysis (FMA), Destructive Physical Analysis (DPA) of microelectronic components, printed circuits boards, component device packaging and related materials.
Don’s background has been primarily semiconductors starting with a part time job with Transitron in 1965 while studying at Northeastern University. He moved onto Fairchild Semiconductor in 1968 where he spent the next 14 years. From there he moved onto national Semiconductor, General Instruments and various other organizations until he opened his current company in 1991
Neil Vill is President and Chief Executive Officer of World Data Products, Inc. (WDPI), a leading independent reseller of IT equipment (servers, routers, switches and related components) for corporate and government data centers. WDPI has been in business since 1987. Vill joined WDPI as a member of the Board of Directors in January, 2001 and as President and CEO in August, 2004. He also serves as Chairman of ASCDI (Association of Service and Computer Dealers International), a worldwide association representing over 250 IT companies that provide hardware, software, maintenance services, leasing services, business solutions, technical support and value added services. Vill also is Chairman of ASCDI’s Anti-Counterfeit Committee and serves as a member of the SAE G19 Counterfeit Electronic Parts Committee.
Vill holds an MBA degree from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was named an Arjay Miller Scholar. He also received a BBA degree in Finance, with honors, from the University of Notre Dame
