Although the market for UV LEDs is quite large, the development of low cost high luminosity UV LEDS has not followed at the same pace as the rapid evolution of blue LEDs. While blue LEDs drawing 1A can be purchased for under $10 in small quantity and much less in high volume, one can expect to pay 3 to 10 times as much for a UV LED. This presentation explores why UV LEDs so expensive? We have looked at UV LEDs from various manufacturers comparing their packaging and device structures to understand how the unique requirements of these LEDs are met. SEM and TEM images will be presented.
